Well, some of the folks their have just about talked me into doing their triathlon training as well. I'm not 100% committed to it yet, but it does give me an excuse to do something I've been wanting to do for awhile - build a new bike for myself. I've got a mountain bike that I bought a few years ago from a local shop, but I'd really like to know how to build and maintain one myself. So, with the help of a friend, I'm seriously considering buying a bunch of parts and assembling the Lothian Locomotator of Dooooom.
So far, I've been looking mostly at frames and "groupsets." The frame should be obvious. The "groupset" is basically the stuff that makes you go - the front crank and gears, the rear gear cassette, and associated derailleurs, shifters, etc. So far, there are two framesets under consideration:
I'm not sure there's anywhere local to try out the Surly, but I did hit up The Bike Zoo this evening to try out the Allez. I was impressed with the weight of the Allez - it's like a feather compared to my mountain bike. It felt pretty good, although it's hard for to tell with a quick test ride. Plus, I don't actually like know enough.
For the groupset, I think I'll end up going with the Shimano 105s. From everything I read, they're a good combination of reliable, light, and reasonably inexpensive. More thoughts later once I complete more research.
